Fiddler on the  Roof

Chamblee High School
Feb 2023

Fiddler on the Roof is a production with many location changes, so a modular set gave us the most flexibility.

The entire set was comprised of six double-sided flats, which we combined in different ways to create different settings.

Some flats were blank, some were permanently staged with accessories.  Others had shelves or hooks that allowed for quick changes.

A towering 3-story set designed to evoke New York City in 1906.

The switchback staircase spins on swivel casters to function from multiple directions as various set pieces and as a versatile choreography platform.

The functional gates also convert to a burlesque stage. The World sign folds down, and a set of red velvet curtains can be quickly added and unfurled over the gates.

The prominent chalkboard is used throughout the show to display the day's headlines.

Weathered wood crates constructed from industrial pallets and rope serve as versatile cubes for blocking and choreography.

Drowsy Chaperone

An Art Deco-inspired set, with twin staircases and an upper platform.

Embellished mesh panels shielded the 16-musician pit orchestra from the audience, while allowing the conductor to monitor the stage for cues.  A passage for stage entry and exit runs directly through the center, hidden by mesh flaps.

The center panel in upper baluster features a box on a swivel.  For the majority of the show, it presents an illuminated stained glass panel.

At the end of the show, the light panel swiveled 180 degrees, to magically transform the balcony into a biplane.  The center panel becomes a spinning propeller, and bright yellow wings unfurl from their tightly wrapped  hiding places on the rails, with just the pull of a cord.
